Reviving Memories Through Music A Thanksgiving Celebration at Brookdale Senior Living

Updated: Dec 25, 2025

Thanksgiving is a time to gather, reflect, and share moments of joy. For the residents of Brookdale Senior Living, this year’s celebration became much more than a meal or a simple gathering. It turned into a heartfelt journey back in time, sparked by the power of music. Leading a small team of volunteers, I had the privilege of organizing a special event that brought smiles, laughter, and even dancing to ten nursing home residents on November 29, 2025.

Planning a Meaningful Celebration

Organizing an event for seniors requires more than just decorations and food. It demands understanding what truly connects with them. My team of three volunteers and I focused on creating an experience that would engage the residents emotionally and mentally. We chose musical bingo featuring songs from the 1950s and 60s, a period many of the attendees fondly remember.

This choice was intentional. Music from these decades often triggers vivid memories, helping residents recall moments from their youth. The goal was to create a space where they could relive happy times and share stories sparked by familiar tunes.

As the musical bingo began, the room filled with recognizable melodies from legends like Elvis Presley, Ray Charles, Ricky Nelson, Roy Orbison, and The Beatles. The residents’ reactions were immediate and heartwarming. Many recognized the songs instantly, their faces lighting up with joy.

One resident exclaimed, “Oh! This is my favorite song, ever,” when she saw her favorite tune on the bingo sheet. The music transported her and others back to simpler times, when they were teenagers enjoying the vibrant music scene.

A Moment of Joy and Connection

The highlight of the event was when Lucinda, one of the residents, stood up and started dancing to “Twist and Shout.” She dropped her bingo pencil and moved freely, her energy contagious. Her joy inspired others to join in, clapping and twisting along with her.

This spontaneous dance moment was more than entertainment. It was a reminder of the resilience and spirit that lives within each resident. For a brief time, they were not limited by age or health but were simply young people enjoying music and movement.

A Moment of Companionship

Ardy was an incredible gentleman I had the pleasure of bonding with during my time in Brookdale. He was bursting with stories he couldn't wait to share, so I eagerly spent time listening as he passionately recounted deeply personal tales about his family and the extraordinary experiences from his 50 years as a Fire Chief. One story that left me in awe was when he nearly lost his life saving a family from a raging fire. As he opened the door, the fumes blasted him 10 yards back, leaving him with burns. It was a miracle he survived! His story was so moving and reminded me how everyone here has lived such fascinating and amazing lives—each one worthy of a full-length feature film! I absolutely love hearing their stories, learning about who they were in their younger days, and soaking up the wisdom they share with me.

Lessons from the Celebration

This Thanksgiving event showed how simple activities can create deep connections and positive emotions for seniors. Here are some takeaways for anyone planning similar celebrations:

  • Choose familiar and meaningful themes: Music or activities that resonate with the audience’s past can unlock memories and emotions.

  • Encourage participation: Allow residents to engage actively, whether through singing, dancing, or sharing stories.

  • Create a supportive environment: A welcoming space where residents feel comfortable expressing themselves enhances the experience.

  • Lead with empathy and enthusiasm: Volunteers who show genuine care and energy can inspire residents to join in and enjoy the moment.
