Holidays can be a difficult time for many nursing home residents, especially those who cannot be with their families. Feeling isolated or left out during these special days is common. To help change that, our non-profit organization organizes activities that bring joy, connection, and a sense of belonging to these residents. On November 28, 2025, we held a musical bingo event at Waltonwood Providence Nursing Home that brightened the day for everyone involved.

Setting the Stage for Fun
The event took place in a warm, inviting common room at Waltonwood Providence. We had 12 residents join us, along with 5 volunteers who helped run the activity. The goal was simple: create an engaging, lively atmosphere where residents could enjoy music, socialize, and have fun playing bingo.
Musical bingo combines the excitement of bingo with the joy of familiar tunes. Instead of numbers, participants listen for songs and mark them on their bingo cards. This format encourages memory recall and sparks conversations about music from different eras, which many residents found uplifting.
How the Event Unfolded
Our team arrived early to set up the space with decorations and music equipment. Volunteers greeted residents as they arrived, helping them get comfortable and explaining the rules of musical bingo. The event started with a brief introduction, sharing the purpose of the activity and encouraging everyone to participate at their own pace.
The playlist included a mix of classic hits and holiday favorites, carefully selected to resonate with the residents’ memories. As songs played, residents listened attentively, marking their cards and cheering when someone got a bingo. The atmosphere was filled with laughter, clapping, and friendly competition.
Volunteers played a key role by assisting residents who needed help with their cards and keeping the energy positive. This support allowed nursing staff to take a well-deserved break, knowing their residents were happily engaged.

Impact on Residents and Staff
The event brought smiles and a sense of belonging to residents who often feel disconnected during holidays. Many shared stories about the songs, recalling memories from their youth or special moments with family. This connection through music helped reduce feelings of loneliness and boosted their mood.
Staff members expressed gratitude for the break and the positive change in the residents’ energy. They noticed how the activity created a calm and joyful environment, making their workday easier and more pleasant.
Our volunteers also found the experience rewarding. Leading the event strengthened their connection with the community and highlighted the importance of small acts of kindness.
Lessons Learned and Future Plans
This first musical bingo event at Waltonwood Providence taught us valuable lessons:
Personalized music selection enhances engagement and emotional connection.
Clear instructions and volunteer support help residents participate confidently.
Creating a relaxed atmosphere encourages social interaction and enjoyment.
We plan to organize similar activities at other nursing homes, adapting the format based on feedback. Our goal remains to bring happiness and a sense of community to residents, especially during times when family visits are limited.

Bringing More Smiles Ahead
Events like the musical bingo at Waltonwood Providence show how simple activities can make a big difference in the lives of nursing home residents. By focusing on connection, joy, and inclusion, we help create moments that matter. If you want to support or volunteer for future events, your involvement can help spread happiness to those who need it most.
