The holiday season is a special time for everyone, especially for seniors who cherish moments of joy and connection. On December 20, 2025, I had the incredible opportunity to host a lively and festive Christmas Musical Bingo event at Brookdale Senior Living! With the enthusiastic support of three amazing volunteers, we transformed the atmosphere into a joyful celebration for nine wonderful residents. The air was filled with holiday cheer as we gathered together, ready to enjoy a unique twist on the classic bingo game. The joy on the residents’ faces was priceless as they engaged in the game, sang along to their favorite holiday tunes, and shared stories of Christmases past. It was a heartwarming reminder of the importance of community and connection, especially during the festive season. This event was not just about playing bingo; it was about creating cherished moments and spreading joy among the beloved seniors.

Welcoming the Residents with Excitement
As the volunteers entered the nursing home, they were met with cheers and squeals of excitement. The residents had been eagerly waiting for this event since the Thanksgiving Musical Bingo held the previous month. The promise of returning for Christmas had sparked anticipation and joy among them.
The atmosphere was filled with warmth and holiday spirit. Residents gathered around, ready to sing along and play. The connection between the volunteers and the attendees was evident, creating a welcoming and inclusive environment where everyone felt valued.

The Power of Holiday Music
The event began with familiar holiday tunes that instantly brought the Christmas spirit alive. Songs like "Santa Claus is Coming To Town" by Frank Sinatra, "A Holly Jolly Christmas" by Burl Ives, "Let It Snow! Let It Snow! Let It Snow!" by Dean Martin, and "Rockin' Around the Christmas Tree" by Brenda Lee filled the room with cheer.
The music spilled beyond the bingo room, reaching other residents in the nursing home who followed the rhythm and joined in the celebration. The melodies sparked memories of past Christmases, creating moments of nostalgia and happiness.

Adding a Surprise Element with Prizes
What the residents didn’t know was that the volunteers and I had raised money to provide prizes for the bingo winners. This surprise was kept secret until the first winner was announced, adding an extra layer of excitement.
The first winner, Ardy, received a light-up Christmas tree beanie, which brought a big smile to his face. The second winner was awarded a gingerbread man mug, and the joy of receiving these prizes energized the entire group. Once the residents realized prizes were involved, their enthusiasm to win grew even stronger.

How Musical Bingo Engages Seniors
Musical Bingo combines the fun of traditional bingo with the joy of music, making it an ideal activity for seniors. It encourages:
Cognitive engagement: Recognizing songs and matching them on bingo cards stimulates memory and attention.
Social interaction: Playing in a group fosters connection and conversation.
Emotional well-being: Music evokes positive emotions and reduces feelings of loneliness.
At Brookdale Senior Living, the residents’ immediate recognition of the holiday songs showed how music can bridge generations and bring people together.

A Life-Changing Perspective from Cherry
During my time at Brookdale, I had an enlightening conversation with Cherry, who was one of the staff members that worked with us to make this event happen. I expressed my appreciation for the hard work she and the staff put into caring for so many seniors. It is no easy task to be a full-time caretaker, but her response left a lasting impression on me that I will carry forever.
Cherry shared that, "Once you see them as your own family, it no longer feels like work. You love them as your own parents and will do everything you can for them." This perspective changed my entire outlook on how I approach service, in both healthcare and in my community. In the past, it was always me serving those in need. However, now, I see the people I serve as my own family. They are no longer separate from me, but a part of me. This is what inclusion means. It is when you see those around you as a part of yourself and will do everything you can to serve them. Their joy is your joy. Their happiness is your happiness.

Residents’ Response and Future Plans
The residents loved the event so much that they insisted the volunteers return for New Year’s celebrations. Their enthusiasm highlights the importance of regular, engaging activities that bring joy and connection.
Events like this show how thoughtful planning and community involvement can brighten the lives of seniors. The combination of music, games, and surprises created a festive atmosphere that will be remembered long after the holiday season.
This Christmas Musical Bingo event at Brookdale Senior Living was a shining example of how music and community spirit can create meaningful moments for seniors. The smiles, laughter, and excitement proved that simple joys can make a big difference. For those looking to bring holiday cheer to seniors, organizing similar events with music, games, and small prizes can foster happiness and connection.
